"Repentance" and all the words we're going to be studying "At the Crux" needs to be more than just a word. With the practice of putting ashes on themselves in moments when they woke up to their sin and shame, the Israelites were saying on the outside, what they knew on the inside: "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away." (Isaiah 64:6 NIV) With "Ash Wednesday" we are reaching for something real, the ability to admit our sins and truly walk away from them, embracing the forgiveness won by Christ on the cross.
Jesus pays both the debt of our sin, and swallows up the righteous anger of God over our sin. Romans 3:23-25. Jesus is our Propitiation!

Justification. What is justification really all about? What does it mean for us? As we look at the story of the Prodigal or Lost Son in Luke 15:11-32 we can see what justification truly is when we take a closer look at the Father's actions to the son who disgraced him. Maybe as we look at this story we can also see ourselves as the son who disgraces the Father through our sinful behavior, and also see a God who then shows us what justification is by His loving and redeeming actions.
